THE Commitment: The Coaching Profession

To practice as a teacher, counselor, therapist, or medical professional, for example, requires investment and commitment in education, training, and credentialing. This is not the same as coaching where anyone on any day can decide to become a coach. So how does a client know whether a coach is a professional worthy of their time and money? One way is choosing a coach aligned with the International Coaching Federation (ICF).

Founded in 1995 by Thomas Leonard, ICF represents the apex of coaching standards, establishing universal core values and ethical guidelines that set ICF coaches apart in the field. ICF coaches are professionals who have met stringent education and experience requirements and adhere to strict ethical guidelines as part of ICF’s mission to protect and serve coaching consumers.

Being an ICF coach demonstrates your commitment to excellence and also signals to others you choose a mindset valuing self-awareness, self-development, and self-regulation with the person being coached rather than the problem or desired outcome.

ICF Core Values

The foundation of the ICF mindset is built upon four core values:

1. Professionalism: This encompasses responsibility, respect, integrity, competence, and excellence. ICF coaches commit to maintaining high standards in their practice and interactions.

2. Collaboration: ICF emphasizes the importance of social connections and community building among coaches, fostering a supportive network that enhances the coaching experience.

3. Humanity: A commitment to being kind, compassionate, and respectful towards others is essential in coaching relationships, reinforcing the human element that underpins effective coaching.

4. Equity: ICF coaches strive to understand and address the diverse needs of their clients, practicing equitable processes to create opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their background.

ICF Ethical Standards

The ICF outlines several ethical responsibilities that coaches must uphold:

1. Responsibility to Clients: Coaches are obligated to act in the best interest of their clients, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for personal growth. They must maintain confidentiality and respect the Client's autonomy throughout the coaching process.

2. Responsibility to Practice: Coaches are expected to uphold high standards of professional competence and integrity, committing to ongoing development and ethical practice. This includes staying informed about coaching practices and adhering to relevant laws and regulations.

3. Responsibility to the Profession: Coaches have a duty to contribute positively to the coaching profession by promoting ethical practices and supporting the development of fellow coaches. This involves engaging in activities that foster community and collaboration among practitioners.

4. Responsibility to Society: Coaches are encouraged to consider the broader impact of their work and to advocate for social responsibility, promoting positive change within their communities and respecting diversity.

The ICF mindset is not just about skill and technique; it encapsulates a holistic approach to coaching that prioritizes ethical conduct, professional growth, and societal impact. By embracing these principles, ICF coaches can create transformative experiences for their clients while contributing positively to the coaching profession as a whole.

ICF PLEDGE OF ETHICS

As an ICF Professional, in accordance with the Standards of the ICF Code of Ethics, I acknowledge and agree to fulfill my ethical and legal obligations to my coaching Client(s), Sponsor(s), colleagues and to the public at large. If I breach any part of the ICF Code of Ethics, I agree that ICF in its sole discretion may hold me accountable for so doing. I further agree that my accountability to ICF for any breach may include sanctions, such as mandatory additional coach training or other education, or loss of my ICF Membership and / or my ICF Credential.

THE Foundation: Building Trust for Psychological Safety in the Coach-Client Relationship

People seek coaching for various reasons—whether to overcome obstacles, enhance performance, clarify goals, or cultivate a more fulfilling life. Your success as a coach, therefore, is directly hinged to your ability in authentically establishing and nurturing a sense of psychological safety with your client. When clients feel psychologically safe with you, then they feel trust—the key to a successful transformative coaching experience.

Transformative coaching focuses on supporting the client in discovering a perspective shift for long-term change. It helps people:

  • Identify and challenge limiting beliefs

  • Reframe their thinking about life

  • Discover their strengths, values, and priorities

  • Understand how their patterns of resistance prevent them from making progress

  • Unlock new possibilities for achieving their goals

  • Improve their relationships with themselves and others

As a transformative coach, validation is one of the first steps in establishing a successful coaching relationship. This process involves recognizing and affirming your client’s feelings, experiences, and perspectives, which is essential in building rapport and trust. When clients feel heard and understood, they are more likely to feel psychologically safe—a critical foundation for fostering a strong coaching relationship.

FOSTERING A PSYCHOLogically SAFE ENVIRONMENT

An integral aspect of the ThirtySpoke approach is the application of neuroscience in coaching. By understanding how the brain functions and the underlying mechanisms of behavior, clients gain valuable insights into why they act the way they do. This knowledge empowers them to navigate their emotional responses and decision-making processes, enhancing their overall coaching experience.

When clients comprehend how the brain functions and impacts behaviors, they can approach their challenges with greater clarity and confidence, leading to more meaningful outcomes. Through the ThirtySpoke framework, clients are not only supported in their journey toward personal growth, but are also equipped with the tools necessary to understand themselves on a deeper level. When a client feels secure in the coach-client relationship, they are more willing to engage openly, allowing them to tap into their affective learning domain.

Openness enables clients to explore their inner world of beliefs, assumptions, values, and interests while processing their thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment. ThirtySpoke embraces this holistic approach to set the conditions for maximizing the client’s opportunity to create greater possibilities for ways of being that resonates with their authentic selves, ultimately leading to a fulfilling and empowered life.

THE THIRTYSPOKE FIELD GUIDE

The goal of this guide is to help coaches build collaborative partnerships that empowers clients to navigate and transform their life with confidence. This partnership involves a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires clients to explore their potential. When you set the conditions for trust, clients can equip themselves with the courage to confront their challenges and embrace their growth, leading to meaningful and lasting change in their lives.

Some of the benefits the guide offers are tools and techniques in transformative coaching to help your clients:

Enhance Self-Awareness

One of the foundational elements of the ThirtySpoke approach is the development of self-awareness. Through various assessments and reflective exercises, you will gain valuable insights into your strengths, values, and challenges. This heightened self-awareness enables you to align your actions and decisions with your authentic self, fostering deeper connections and more effective, meaningful relationships. By understanding who you are, you can make choices that resonate with your true identity.

Improve Relationship Intelligence (RQ)

A core focus of our methodology is expanding your understanding of how the brain functions and how emotions influence behavior. By learning techniques for emotional regulation and management, you will enhance your emotional intelligence, allowing you to cultivate stronger interpersonal relationships. This growth in relationship intelligence empowers you to navigate social dynamics with confidence and empathy, resulting in more fulfilling interactions both personally and professionally.

Refine Decision-Making Skills

The ThirtySpoke approach emphasizes the importance of informed decision-making. By understanding how your brain processes information, you can overcome cognitive limitations and make more rational, strategic choices. This skill set will help you navigate complex situations and make decisions that align with your core values and long-term goals, ultimately leading to a more purpose-driven life.

Grow Well-Being and Resilience

Our coaching philosophy prioritizes overall well-being as a means to achieve balance. By focusing on your well-being, you will develop the resilience needed to handle challenges effectively, maintain focus amidst distractions, and cultivate a positive mindset that propels you forward. This emphasis on well-being creates a solid foundation for sustained personal and professional growth.

Iterate to High Performance

Understanding the neuroscience behind your actions allows you to uncover your true motives and intents. With this knowledge, you can take proactive steps toward high performance, continually iterating on your strategies to achieve greater success. The ThirtySpoke approach envisions a holistic way of living where consistent positive choices contribute to a sustainable balance in life. By recognizing that our choices accumulate over time, we can create a "wheel of relationships" that fosters harmony and fulfillment.
