  • We have a finite amount of time. Whether short or long, it doesn’t matter. Life is to be lived.Randy Pausch

When we think of completing our life goals in terms of time, we may estimate in months, years, or decades…but what about the last 15 minutes of your life?

    THINK IT

+Were you living your last 15 minutes like your time is finite or infinite?

+Would you consider those last 15 minutes “life to be lived”?

+If you could have done something else for those last 15 minutes, would you? What would it have been? What would notice is different for you now?

  • Now, consider this interpretation of chapter 11’s Tao Te Ching:

    Thirty spokes share the wheel’s hub;

It is the center hole that makes it useful.

Imagine life in balance like that of a wheel where all of its “spokes” — the stuff of our well-being that is unique and of important value to each of us — are of equal length and satisfactory working condition.

You might feel that your life — the center hub where all the spokes meet up — is good, in order, and you are in control.

Now imagine one or more of those spokes — perhaps a relationship in your life affected by unexpected change causing conflict, even suffering — is compromised, rusts, or breaks.

    What happens?

+Does life feel overwhelming, too much, or out of control?

+Do you want to find balance and harmony for a smoother ride along life’s path?

As Lao Tzu might say, your life is the mystery of the “hole of the hub.”

Everything that makes up your life’s well-being — physical, mental, nutritional, spiritual, career, social and everything else — is therefore a spoke.

The spokes are what you devote your focus, attention, energy, resources…and time down to every second of every day of your life.

Knowing the impact to sustain the quality of our “thirty spokes of life” is critical to iterating ourselves.

    SPEAK IT

+Do you know the names of your spokes?
+How many spokes do you have?
+In your present moment, would you consider your spokes the same length, thus a more balanced ride along life’s path?
+Or are one or more of your spokes shorter or longer than the other, perhaps indicating an imbalance in life, a bumpier ride for you?

    Example with Template

+Think back to what time you went to bed yesterday and what time you got up today.

+Now think about all of the activities you have engaged in up until this moment.

+Record the activity and time in a tracker.

+If you can, do the same for yesterday.

+Now estimate what the next few days of activity and time might look like for you.

+To support accuracy, use your iPhone’s metadata, for example, to corroborate your activity specifics.

+Do your best to capture all activities and account for your time to a quarter of an hour.

+After a few days, analyze your data.

Track your activity down to the quarter of an hour to gain awareness of what you do with your time.

Then share your experience with ThirtySpoke@gmail.com

Ronda’s experience: This activity was a challenge for me to commit to, but I did it! I had no idea how much I actually did in a day let alone a week. It was eye-opening and caused me to evaluate how I want to spend my time from here on to become more balanced in the “Trifecta of Eight”

    • 8 hours of sleep

    • 8 hours of working for someone else

    • 8 hours of doing what I want to do

I’m excited to hear what you discover about yourself :)

  • Sometimes asking ourselves open-ended questions helps uncover new ways of thinking and demonstrate mental agility.
